The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a binding element holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence
A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
