British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
