Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
