England and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing win, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
